Repair opens what refuses to open

Most "corrupt" files are not destroyed. One structure is broken and everything after it is fine. Repair rebuilds that structure and writes a new file rather than touching yours.

Can it fix any broken file?

No, and anything that says otherwise is selling you something. If the bytes are gone, they are gone. Manatee recovers what is still readable and reports how much. Try it on your file during the trial.
