Privacy

It blurs. It never looks.

Shoji is a privacy screen, so it had better be private itself. Here is everything it keeps, everything it sends, and what it never touches.

What Shoji never touches

• Your screen. The blur is drawn by macOS itself; Shoji never captures or records the screen.
• What is in your windows, and their titles. Shoji only knows where windows are, so it can cover them.
• Your password. It goes straight to macOS to be checked, and is never stored, logged or sent anywhere.

What stays on your Mac

• Your settings, in the usual place for app settings.
• Your license key and when your trial started, in your Keychain.
• A small marker while your Mac is locked, so a lock survives a crash or a Force Quit.
• The times of wrong passwords typed at the lock in the last 30 days, so you can see them. Only the times, never what was typed.

Settings, About, Uninstall removes all of it.

What goes online, and only this

• License activation, to Dodo Payments, our merchant of record: your key and a name for this Mac made of its model and a random tag, like "MacBook Pro 7F3A". A licensed copy checks again once a month so a refund can be honoured.
• Update checks, to everydaymactools.com, once a day unless you turn them off. They send nothing about you or your Mac, not even the version you run.

The release build fails if networking appears anywhere in Shoji outside those two parts.

What we never do

No account, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifiers. If Shoji ever crashes, macOS's own crash reporter is the only one that knows.

Buying

Checkout happens on Dodo Payments, who handle your payment details under their own privacy policy. We receive your email address and the order, so we can send your key and help if something goes wrong.
