Break tracking for wrists: noticing hours you never stood up

Break reminders have a poor record. They arrive mid-sentence, get dismissed, and after a week they are noise. The ones that let you snooze become a thing you snooze.
The underlying advice is sound; the delivery is wrong. A reminder asks you to interrupt something you are absorbed in, on the basis of a rule you agreed to in the abstract. That is a weak argument at the moment it arrives.
A record of what actually happened is a stronger one, because it is specific and it arrives when you are able to think about it.
What a day’s record shows about breaks
An automatic record of application usage shows continuous stretches. Three hours forty in one application without a gap is visible in a way it is not while it is happening.
That number is more persuasive than a notification, for two reasons. It is about you rather than about a general rule, and you read it at the end of the day rather than in the middle of a task.
Over a week, patterns emerge that are worth acting on. The long unbroken stretches usually cluster: a particular kind of work, a particular time of day, often the afternoon after a morning of meetings. Knowing which conditions produce them is more useful than a reminder every fifty minutes, because it lets you plan around the conditions.
Why the absorbing work is the problem
The stretches that matter are not the ones where you were grinding through something tedious. Tedious work produces natural breaks; you get up because you want to.
The dangerous stretches are the absorbing ones. Work that is going well suppresses the signals that would otherwise make you move: mild discomfort, restlessness, thirst. You do not notice because the work is holding your attention, which is exactly the state everyone is trying to achieve.
So the problem is not a lack of discipline. It is that the desirable state and the harmful one are the same state, and the internal signal that would end it is suppressed by the thing causing it.
That is an argument for an external signal, and specifically for one that does not depend on you noticing anything.
An approach that works better than reminders
Use the record to find your pattern. A week of data tells you when the long stretches happen. That is more actionable than a generic interval.
Attach breaks to transitions rather than to the clock. Standing up when you finish a task, or when you switch applications after a long stretch, is easier than standing up because a notification arrived. Transitions already exist; you are attaching a habit to them rather than creating an interruption.
Make one structural change instead of many behavioural ones. A change to where you work, how the desk is arranged, or when meetings sit in the day removes a whole class of long stretches. Behavioural rules require ongoing effort and decay.
Check the record weekly rather than fighting daily. The point of measurement here is the trend. If long unbroken stretches are falling, whatever you changed is working.
The honest limits
Two things worth being clear about.
An application-level record shows time in an application, not time at the keyboard. Reading on screen and typing continuously look the same. For wrists specifically, the second is the risk and the record does not distinguish them.
And this is not medical advice. Persistent pain, numbness or weakness needs a clinician, not a better notification. What a record does is make a pattern visible; what to do about a symptom is a different question and not one a time record can answer.
Where Punchcard fits
Punchcard records the frontmost application by name, subtracts idle time, and prints a receipt of the day at the closing time you set: one line per application, with a total.
Idle subtraction is the relevant behaviour here. Because it stops counting when input stops, the recorded time approximates time actually at the machine rather than time with a window open. A long recorded stretch is therefore a genuinely long stretch of interaction, which is the thing you wanted to know.
What it will not do is remind you to take a break. It has no notifications during the day, no timers and no interventions; it reports at the closing time and is otherwise silent. That is a deliberate constraint, and for this use it means the tool is a source of evidence rather than another thing dismissing itself into irrelevance. If you want active reminders, that is a different tool and worth having alongside. The two do different jobs: one interrupts, the other tells you afterwards whether the interruption worked.
A reasonable weekly practice
- Read the receipt each evening. Note the longest unbroken stretch.
- On a Sunday, look at the week. When do the long stretches cluster?
- Change one structural thing that affects that cluster.
- Check next week whether the longest stretch moved.

Questions
Does the record show typing versus reading? No. It knows input arrived, not what kind or how much. For wrists that is a real limitation.
I use a standing desk. Does that solve it? It changes the posture, not the continuity. Long unbroken stretches standing are also worth breaking up. The record measures the thing that matters either way.
Should I use a reminder app as well? If they work for you, yes. Many people find they work better once the record has shown them the specific pattern, because the interval is chosen from evidence rather than picked arbitrarily.
What counts as a long stretch? There is no universal figure worth quoting. Your own baseline, and whether it is rising or falling, is the useful comparison.
