Surge protection, power bricks and travelling with a Mac charger

Mac power adapters are more forgiving than people assume, and the practical questions when travelling are about plugs and wattage rather than voltage.
Voltage: not a problem
Every Apple power adapter is rated 100 to 240 volts, 50 to 60 Hz. That covers essentially every mains supply in the world.
So you need a plug adapter, which changes the shape of the pins, not a voltage converter, which changes the electricity. Converters are heavy, unnecessary for a Mac, and can be worse than nothing if poorly made.
Check the small print on your own adapter to confirm. It is printed on the brick.
Wattage: the thing that matters
Chargers vary in how much power they deliver, and Macs vary in what they can accept.
Using a lower-wattage charger is safe. The Mac charges more slowly. Under heavy load it may even discharge slightly while plugged in, because the machine is drawing more than the charger supplies. Nothing is damaged.
Using a higher-wattage charger is also safe. The Mac draws what it needs and no more. A 96 W charger on a machine that wants 30 W simply delivers 30 W.
So one reasonably powerful USB-C charger covers everything you own, which is the practical answer for travel: carry one good charger rather than several.
What to carry
One USB-C charger rated at or above what your Mac wants. If you also charge a phone and headphones, a multi-port charger saves space and a socket.
One good cable. USB-C to USB-C, rated for the wattage. A thin phone cable may limit charging speed, and a cable that charges may not carry video if you also want to connect a display. Why a USB-C cable can charge but not carry video covers that.
A plug adapter for the destination, or a travel adapter covering several regions.
Not a voltage converter.
MagSafe or USB-C
On Macs that have MagSafe, either works. MagSafe frees a Thunderbolt port and detaches if someone trips over the cable, which is its whole purpose.
USB-C charging works identically and occupies a port. For travel, charging over USB-C means one cable type for everything.
Surge protection at home
Worth having, and worth understanding what it does.
A surge protector absorbs voltage spikes. They have a finite capacity and degrade with each event, so a protector that has been in place for years may no longer be protecting anything. Many have an indicator light showing whether the protection is still active; a power strip without one gives you no way to tell.
For a desktop Mac and its peripherals, a decent surge protector is cheap insurance. For a laptop, less critical, since the adapter provides isolation and the battery buffers brief interruptions.
An uninterruptible power supply is worth considering only for a desktop doing work that would be damaged by an abrupt shutdown, or in an area with frequent cuts.
Third-party chargers
Fine, if reputable. Look for USB-C Power Delivery certification and a recognisable brand.
The risk with very cheap unbranded adapters is a safety one rather than a battery one: poor isolation between mains and the low-voltage side. That is worth avoiding on principle, and it has nothing to do with Apple wanting you to buy theirs.
In hotels and airports
Public USB ports deliver power and can in principle carry data. The risk is low and easily removed by using your own charger in a mains socket, or a charge-only cable.
Aircraft power is often limited and may not charge a laptop at full speed, or at all under load. Expect to slow the discharge rather than to charge.
Hotel sockets are sometimes switched off with the room key card, which is the actual reason your Mac did not charge overnight.

Questions
Will a 30 W charger charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro? Yes, slowly, and it may not keep up during heavy work. Fine overnight, frustrating during a working day.
Can I use my iPad charger? Yes, if it is USB-C. Same considerations about wattage.

Is a car inverter safe? A decent one, yes. A USB-C car charger of adequate wattage is simpler and avoids the inverter entirely.
