Good questions
Before you trust it.
Does the other person need Hushbox?
Yes, they need Hushbox on a Mac to open the .hush package—but opening packages is always free. Only the person creating packages or using Private Vault needs a paid license after the trial.
Does Hushbox upload my files?
No. File and folder processing is entirely local. Hushbox contacts Dodo Payments only when you activate or validate a license.
What encryption does it use?
AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption with unique nonces for every chunk. Passwords are hardened with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 and 310,000 rounds.
Can you recover a forgotten password?
No. There is no back door and no password recovery. A password manager is the safest place to keep it.
What happens when I hide an original?
Hushbox first creates and verifies the encrypted vault copy, then moves the source to macOS Trash. It never silently erases the original.
Can someone on Windows open a .hush file?
Version 2.1.4 is Mac-only. Both the sender and recipient need Hushbox on macOS.
