Why a USB-C cable can charge but not carry video

You connect a monitor over USB-C. The Mac charges, the monitor does nothing. Nothing in either device suggests why, because from the outside the cable is doing something, so it must be working.

Charging and video travel over different wires inside the same connector, and plenty of cables include one set and not the other.

What is happening inside the cable

A USB-C connector has 24 pins. Power uses a few of them. Data uses others. Video, carried as DisplayPort over an alternate mode, uses a further set, including the high-speed pairs.

A cable manufacturer can leave out the high-speed pairs and still produce something that charges perfectly. Those cables are cheaper, thinner and extremely common, because they ship with phones and accessories where video was never the point.

So a cable that charges proves the power wires are present. It proves nothing about the rest.

Confirm it is the cable

Two minutes, in this order.

Swap the cable. Use one you know carries video, ideally a Thunderbolt cable. If the display appears, you are done and the old cable goes in the phone-charging drawer.

Check the Mac sees anything at all. With the monitor connected, hold Option and click the Apple menu, then System Information, then Graphics/Displays. Or:

system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep -E "Display Type|Resolution"

If only the built-in display is listed, no video signal is reaching the Mac. That points at the cable, the port on the monitor, or the monitor’s input selection.

Check the monitor’s input. Many monitors do not switch to USB-C automatically. Cycle the inputs manually. This accounts for a surprising share of “no signal” reports.

The other cable trap: length and speed

Even a cable that carries video may not carry enough of it.

A long, passive USB-C cable can manage a lower resolution or refresh rate and fail at higher ones. The symptom is a display that works at 1080p and goes black at 4K, or works at 30 Hz and not 60.

If the display works but only at a disappointing resolution, suspect the cable before the Mac. A short Thunderbolt cable is the test.

Does the monitor support USB-C video at all?

Worth checking rather than assuming. Some monitors have a USB-C port that is data and power only, with video expected over HDMI or DisplayPort.

The specification will say “DisplayPort Alt Mode” or “USB-C with video”. If it does not mention video, the port does not carry it, and no cable will change that.

The dock in between

If the monitor is connected through a hub or dock, that is another link that may not support what you need.

Cheap hubs frequently support one display at a modest resolution. A Thunderbolt dock generally handles displays properly. If a monitor works connected directly and not through the hub, the hub is the limit. Choosing a dock covers picking one that does what you need.

What to buy so this stops happening

One Thunderbolt cable, kept for the monitor. They carry power, data and video without qualification, and they are marked with a lightning bolt.

Then label it, because the next cable you pick up out of the drawer will look identical and may not do the same job.

If the cable is fine and it still will not work

Move on to the display side of the problem: detection, resolution and arrangement. A display the Mac refuses to detect covers the diagnosis order once the cable is ruled out.

Also worth checking how many external displays your particular Mac supports, which varies by chip and is a limit people meet without knowing it exists. How many external displays your Mac can drive covers it.

Questions

Can I tell by looking at the cable? Not reliably. A lightning bolt marking indicates Thunderbolt. Beyond that, thickness is a weak hint and nothing more.

My cable worked with a different laptop. Then it carries video, and the problem is elsewhere: the monitor’s input selection, the resolution being requested, or the Mac’s display limit.

Does the direction of the cable matter? It should not for a proper cable. Some poorly made cables behave differently depending on which end goes where, which is a good reason to replace them.

Will a USB-C to HDMI adapter work? Yes, if the Mac’s port supports video, which on any current Mac it does. The adapter’s quality determines the maximum resolution and refresh rate.
