Choosing a dock for a laptop that lives on a desk

A laptop that moves between a desk and elsewhere is best served by one cable at the desk: plug in, and the displays, drives, keyboard, network and power all connect at once.
Getting there means choosing between two things that look similar and are not.
Hub or dock
A hub shares a single port’s bandwidth among several connectors. Cheap, bus-powered, small. Fine for a keyboard, a mouse, a card reader and an occasional drive.
A Thunderbolt dock has its own power supply and considerably more bandwidth. It handles displays properly, charges the laptop, and runs drives at full speed simultaneously.
The dividing line is displays. If you want one cable that also drives a monitor and charges the machine, you want a dock. If you want more USB ports, a hub is enough.
Power delivery is the specification that matters
A dock charges the laptop through the same cable. How much it delivers determines whether that actually works.
Check the dock’s power delivery to the host, which is not the same as its total power output. A dock advertising 100 W total may deliver only 60 W to the laptop.
For a 13 or 14-inch MacBook, 60 W upwards is comfortable. For a 16-inch, look for 85 W or more, and expect it to charge slowly under heavy load if the figure is lower. Nothing is damaged either way; the machine simply tops up more slowly. Surge protection, power bricks and travelling with a charger covers the wattage question generally.
Displays are where docks disappoint
The most common complaint, and it usually traces to one of three things.
Your Mac’s own limit. The chip determines how many external displays it supports, and a dock does not raise it. A base-chip Mac that supports one display supports one display through any dock. How many external displays your Mac can drive covers checking yours.
The dock’s limit, which may be lower than the Mac’s, particularly on cheaper hubs where a second display runs at a reduced resolution or refresh rate.
DisplayLink, which some docks use to exceed the Mac’s native limit. It works, needs a driver, uses processor time, and is not suitable for video work. Fine for a static second screen.
Read the dock’s specification for the exact combination you want: number of displays, resolution, and refresh rate together. “Supports 4K” often means one display, or two at 30 Hz.
Ethernet, which is underrated
If the dock has Ethernet, use it. A wired connection is more consistent than Wi-Fi, particularly for video calls and large transfers, and it removes a whole category of intermittent problem.
What quietly fails
Three things worth knowing before they happen.
The dock’s own firmware. Docks receive updates, and updating usually requires connecting to a Windows machine. Worth checking before you buy if that would be a problem.
Waking from sleep. Some docks lose displays or peripherals when the Mac sleeps and wakes. This is the most common real-world annoyance, and it varies by dock and macOS version rather than being predictable from the specification.
The cable. The cable between Mac and dock has to carry everything. A poor one silently caps resolution or speed. Use the cable supplied, or a proper Thunderbolt cable. Why a USB-C cable can charge but not carry video covers that failure.
A reasonable setup
For most people at a desk:
- A Thunderbolt dock with enough power delivery for the machine
- One Thunderbolt cable to the Mac
- Displays connected to the dock
- Ethernet from the dock
- Keyboard, mouse and drives on the dock’s USB ports
Then the daily act is one cable. That is the whole point, and it is genuinely better than four.

Questions
Do I need Thunderbolt, or is USB-C enough? For displays and fast drives, Thunderbolt. For peripherals only, USB-C is fine and cheaper.
Why does my dock’s second monitor not work? Check your Mac’s display limit first, then the dock’s, then the cable. In that order. It is usually the first.
Will a dock charge my laptop fully while I work? If its host power delivery matches or exceeds what the machine draws. Under sustained heavy load with an underpowered dock, the battery can slowly discharge.
Is a dock worth it for one monitor? If it also carries power, network and peripherals, yes. The value is in the single cable, not the display count.
