How to convert AC3 surround audio to M4A on a Mac
AC3, better known as Dolby Digital, is the surround audio format you find on DVDs, Blu-ray rips, and movie soundtracks, and Apple devices do not handle a raw .ac3 file well. Converting it to M4A produces a file the Music app, iPhones, and QuickTime play without complaint. The quick version: drag the .ac3 file onto Manatee, choose Convert, and pick M4A. What AC3 and M4A are
AC3, or Dolby Digital, is a lossy compressed audio format built for surround sound. A single .ac3 file often carries six channels: front left and right, a center channel, two surround channels, and a low-frequency effects channel, an arrangement written as 5.1. It is a broadcast and disc standard, which is why it turns up whenever you extract the audio track from a DVD or a video file.
M4A is a container that almost always holds AAC, the modern lossy codec Apple uses everywhere. The Music app, iPhones, iPads, and QuickTime all treat M4A as a native format that imports and plays with no add-ons. Converting AC3 to M4A, then, is about getting surround-era audio into something the Apple world plays cleanly.
You may also run into E-AC-3, sometimes written .eac3 and marketed as Dolby Digital Plus, which is the newer, higher-efficiency cousin of AC3 used by streaming services and some broadcasts. It is lossy in the same way, and everything in this guide applies to it just as much as to a plain .ac3 file: the goal and the trade-offs are identical.
Lossy to lossy: the honest trade-off
Both AC3 and AAC are lossy formats, meaning each one already discarded detail its encoder judged inaudible in order to keep the file small. Converting from one to the other decodes the AC3 back to PCM and compresses it again as AAC, which is a second lossy pass. That is a fresh generation of loss layered on the first, and there is no avoiding it when the source is already lossy.
In practice, at a healthy bitrate the result is very hard to tell apart from the AC3 for normal listening, but it is not free the way a lossless conversion is. The rule that keeps quality high is simple: convert once, from the best source you have, rather than passing audio through a chain of lossy steps. What happens to the surround channels
This is the part people miss. AAC can carry 5.1 surround, so multichannel audio can in principle survive the trip into M4A. But whether you actually hear surround afterward depends heavily on where you play it. Many everyday Apple setups, a stereo Mac, an iPhone, a pair of earbuds, fold the audio down to two channels regardless of how many the file contains.
And a great many uses genuinely want plain stereo anyway: putting a track on your phone, adding audio to a library, sharing a clip. So think about the destination. If you need the discrete 5.1 channels for a home theater system, keep the original AC3 file as well, because a lossy conversion is not the place to gamble with a surround master. Convert AC3 to M4A on the Mac
macOS has no stock app that opens a bare .ac3 file and saves it as M4A. The Music app will not import a .ac3 file, and while QuickTime can sometimes play AC3 that lives inside a movie container, a standalone .ac3 track is not something Apple’s apps convert. You need a tool with a Dolby Digital decoder built in.
With Manatee:
- Open Manatee and choose Convert, or drag the .ac3 file onto the menu bar icon. You can also right-click it in Finder and pick Fix with Manatee from the Services menu.
- Choose M4A as the target.
- Drop the file in. It appears in the job list with a progress bar, and you can add a folder of them if you have several.
- The M4A lands next to the original, and the .ac3 file is left exactly as it was.

Questions
Why not just keep the AC3 file?
If everything you use already plays AC3, keep it. The reason to convert is that Apple’s apps and devices do not treat a raw .ac3 as a first-class citizen, so it will not import into your Music library or sync to a phone cleanly. M4A slots into all of that without a fuss.
Will the M4A be surround or stereo?
It depends on the source and the player, as described above. AAC can hold multichannel audio, but many Apple devices downmix to stereo on playback. If discrete surround genuinely matters to you, hold on to the AC3 original as your reference.
My AC3 plays but the dialogue sounds low.
That is a downmixing artifact, not a conversion fault. In a 5.1 mix the dialogue lives mostly in the center channel, and when six channels are folded down to two, center content can feel quiet relative to the music and effects. It is a property of collapsing surround audio to stereo.
Can I convert several AC3 files at once?
Yes. Drop the whole set into the window or select them together, and each one is converted in turn and written alongside its original. That is handy when you have pulled multiple audio tracks off a disc.
