How to convert APE (Monkey's Audio) to FLAC on a Mac

An APE file, also called Monkey’s Audio, almost never plays on a Mac out of the box, and the right fix is to convert it to FLAC. Both formats are lossless, so the conversion keeps every sample of the original audio while moving it into a format that macOS and nearly every player understand. The fastest way is to drop the APE on a converter set to FLAC. The result is the same recording, bit for bit, in a container that actually works on your Mac.

APE and FLAC are both lossless, but only one is welcome on a Mac

APE, the file extension for Monkey’s Audio, is a lossless audio format. Like FLAC, it compresses audio without discarding any of it, so a decoded APE is a perfect reproduction of the original recording. It became popular in some circles because it can squeeze audio slightly harder than other lossless formats, which appealed to people archiving CDs when disk space was scarce.

FLAC, the Free Lossless Audio Codec, is also lossless and also perfectly reversible, but it made a different trade. It compresses a touch less aggressively in exchange for being fast to decode, open in its design, and supported almost everywhere. That support is the whole difference in practice: FLAC is the de facto standard for lossless audio, understood by macOS itself, by most media players, and by a wide range of hardware.

APE never spread the same way. Its support is concentrated on Windows, its decoding is slow and computationally heavy, and Apple’s apps do not read it at all. The Music app will not import an APE, QuickTime will not play one, and Finder cannot preview it, so an APE file on a Mac is usually just a file you cannot open. That is the problem the conversion solves.

Why converting APE to FLAC loses nothing

Because both formats are lossless, converting APE to FLAC is not a quality decision at all. The converter decodes the APE back to raw audio samples, which are identical to the samples that were compressed when the APE was made, then re-encodes those exact samples into FLAC. Nothing is discarded on the way in or on the way out. The FLAC you end up with contains the same audio as the APE, sample for sample.

This is fundamentally different from converting to a lossy format like MP3, where the encoder throws away detail to shrink the file. Moving between two lossless formats is closer to repackaging: the audio is preserved perfectly, and only the wrapper changes. You can convert APE to FLAC, and FLAC back to another lossless format later, as many times as you like, and the recording never degrades.

File size stays in the same neighborhood. FLAC may end up a little larger or smaller than the APE depending on the compression level, but the difference is minor, and you are trading a barely-noticeable size change for a format that opens on your Mac and plays on your other devices. For anyone archiving music losslessly, that is almost always the right trade.

Convert APE to FLAC, step by step

macOS gives you no built-in path here, because none of Apple’s apps can read APE in the first place. There is no Music, QuickTime, or Finder route to convert one, so you need a tool that understands the format directly.

Manatee reads APE and writes FLAC entirely on your Mac, leaving the original file in place. Start it one of three ways: drag the APE onto the Manatee icon in the menu bar, drop it into the app window, or right-click the file in Finder and choose Fix with Manatee.

  1. Open Manatee and choose Convert.
  2. Pick FLAC as the target format.
  3. Drop in the APE file, or a whole folder of albums. Each file appears in the job list with progress.
  4. The new FLAC is written alongside the original, in the same folder. The APE file is left untouched.

Everything runs locally, with no upload and no account, and Manatee bundles its own conversion engine so there is nothing else to install. One note on speed: APE is slow to decode by design, so a large album can take a little longer than a comparable FLAC or WAV job. That is the format’s nature, not a fault of the conversion, and it is a one-time cost to get your audio into a format that opens instantly from then on.

Metadata, batches, and cleaning up afterward

If your APE files are tagged, be aware that the two formats store tags differently. APE files typically use APEv2 tags, while FLAC uses Vorbis comments, and the standard fields like title, artist, album, and track number usually carry across cleanly. Less common or nonstandard fields may not survive the move, so it is worth a quick check of a converted album’s tags before you delete anything. Embedded cover art can be inconsistent between formats too.

For a music collection, convert in batches. Dropping a folder of APE albums in at once and letting them convert together is far less tedious than one file at a time, and it gives you a consistent library of FLAC files that macOS and your players can actually read. Because the audio is identical, you are not making any quality compromise by standardizing the whole collection on FLAC.

Once you have confirmed the FLAC files play and the tags look right, you can decide what to do with the originals. Since the conversion is lossless, the FLAC is a complete replacement for the audio in the APE, so keeping the APE files is optional. If you have plenty of space and want a belt-and-braces archive you can keep them, but there is no fidelity reason to hold onto a format your Mac cannot open.

Does converting APE to FLAC reduce the audio quality?
